A Call to Action to Combat Child Marriage and Promote Education in Ngwedo Sub-County

In Ngwedo, societal norms have perpetuated child marriage, with many girls forced into early unions, which drastically affects their health, education, and overall well-being. Child pregnancy remains one of the leading causes of mortality among girls aged 15 to 19 in Uganda. In response to these alarming trends, CESCRA with support from Girls First Fund has championed a comprehensive campaign, “I Stand Up Against Early Marriage and Teenage Pregnancies,” focusing on empowering community change agents and creating a more supportive environment for girls. The recent passage of a bye-law mandating educational
attendance for school-age children marks a significant stride in combating these issues. However, its success hinges on widespread understanding and community engagement—a crucial factor that CESCRA is addressing through targeted sensitization sessions.
